Unsecured Business Loan Eligibility: What Lenders Check

What lenders check for an unsecured business loan

With no asset to fall back on, unsecured lenders build their eligibility decision entirely around your business and its finances. The typical requirements:

  • Trading history. Most mainstream lenders want to see at least 6-12 months of trading, with some willing to lend to businesses trading for less through startup-specific products.
  • Bank statements and cash flow. Recent business banking activity, usually the last 3-6 months, showing consistent turnover and enough headroom to service repayments.
  • Credit profile. Both the business’s own credit history and, in most cases, the personal credit history of the directors giving the personal guarantee.
  • Annual turnover. Used alongside cash flow to size an affordable loan amount and term, since there’s no asset value to size the loan against instead.

How much you could borrow

Unsecured business loans in the United Kingdom typically range from around £5,000 up to £500,000, though the amount any individual lender will offer depends on your turnover, trading history and existing borrowing. Lenders often cap unsecured lending at a multiple of monthly or annual turnover. Use our unsecured business loan calculator to model your own numbers.

Is it hard to get an unsecured business loan?

It depends on your trading history and credit profile. An established business with clean bank statements and a reasonable credit score will usually find unsecured lending straightforward, often producing indicative terms within 24-48 hours. A newer business, or one with credit issues, may find eligibility harder to meet, and worth comparing against a secured business loan or a government-backed scheme such as Start Up Loans if a suitable asset isn’t available.

How the application and repayment process works

Once you apply, the process for unsecured business loans works differently to secured finance: there’s no valuation or legal charge, so the application moves straight from documents to decision. A small business looking for a flexible, quick facility is exactly what unsecured finance is designed for. Repayment is typically fixed instalments over the agreed term, so you’ll know from the outset exactly what you repay and when, rather than a variable structure.

Interest rates and fees

Because there’s no asset to reduce the lender’s risk, interest on an unsecured business loan is priced higher than on secured finance, with the exact rate depending on your credit profile, trading history and the amount and term requested. Some lenders also charge an arrangement fee on top, so ask for the total cost of borrowing, not just the headline rate, before you commit. Our lending partners on the panel price differently, which is why comparing indicative terms across several is worth the extra few minutes before applying.

Before you apply

A working business current account with a clear transaction history is close to a baseline requirement, since it’s how lenders verify cash flow. Beyond that, how long you’ve been trading, how much money the business turns over, and how eligible your credit profile looks are the three factors that do most of the work in an unsecured decision. Getting these in order before you apply, rather than during underwriting, is the single biggest thing you can do to speed up a decision.

What you’ll need to apply

  1. Basic business details. Company name, trading history, and the amount and purpose of the loan.
  2. Bank statements. Recent months of business banking activity.
  3. Accounts or management information. For limited companies, your latest filed accounts from Companies House, or management information if more recent.
  4. A personal guarantee from directors. Almost universal for unsecured lending; see our guide to personal guarantees for what that actually commits you to.

Unsecured vs secured eligibility

The core difference is what the lender is actually assessing. Unsecured eligibility is a judgement on your business as a going concern; secured eligibility is a judgement on an asset, with your business’s own credit history carrying less weight. If your business doesn’t yet meet unsecured criteria but you have a suitable asset, our secured eligibility guide covers that alternative route in full.
